Chapter 4

RVM Software

4-24

The

PC

Board is the “master” controller board of the machine. It is a Mini-

ITX

 board running the Linux

operating system, and it is located in the

RVM

Controller Box. It runs these software processes: The

Main Control Process, the Diagnostic Program, the Printer Process, the Display Process, and the Hard-
ware Process.

1.

Main Control Process

This process is the “master” process that directs all of the other processes. It also communicates
with the Scanner Multiplexer (

MUX

) board that controls and coordinates the six barcode scan-

ners in the feed unit.

2.

Display Process

The Display Process communicates with the display.

3.

Printer Process

The Printer Process communicates with the printer.

4.

Hardware Process

The Hardware Process directs all of the other hardware in the

RVM

, through the use of custom

controller boards. The Hardware Process translates all of the commands of the Main Control
Process into signals that can be read by these subordinate controller boards. These signals are
conveyed through an

RS

-485 serial connection, using the Multidrop Bus Protocol (

MDB

). The

subordinate boards are

MC

1,

MC

5, and

MD

5. M

C

1 controls the hardware that is common to

all versions of the

ULTRA

series: the safety interlock and the compactors. M

C

5 and

MD

5 work

together to control all of the hardware that is common to the

ULTRA

 48 machines: the In-Feed,

the Sorting Cylinder, and the receipt button.
