6.5 Gas / Water Blocking of Microduct Interstices
The Gas/ Water Blocking of the m/d bundle Interstices should be done at all times at external splice closures and at any point where a microduct
assembly or microduct enters a building. The following products can be used for the gas blocking at building entry. For Water blocking in external
splice closures, most Dome type splice enclosures have the facility to water block the microduct interstices, though the resin pack 9B is still
required.
Lock & Block (see section 8.9)
Remember also that if the bundle comes into the building from an ‘overground’ route, eg aerial, the FU will be secured with L&B as it reaches
the customer tray/box. This may well be at the building entry location. If so, this L&B point will then also act as a gas/water block seal point, so
additional w/b or g/b connectors would not be required.
When more than seven microducts need to enter a building a larger closure must be used. This is simply to allow space for the gas blocking con-
nectors which by their nature are bulky. In these situations we use one of two internal m/d fl exibility point closures. The three way closure has
the advantage of being padlocked should security be an issue but the closure is really only suitable for a maximum of 12 microducts. The four
port closure is recommended at all times when security is not an issue. It is possible to accommodate up to 24 microducts using this product.
Here we see the 3 port being used for a single drop. The exposed microducts should be capped. Note the use of the 5 to 3mm reducing connec-
tor. It is not a gas blocking connector and the customer must have decided that no gas sealing of the microduct was necessary.
