8 Fibre Units And Fibre Handling
Responsibility falls on all concerned regarding Health and Safety and the following must be observed.
Protective Personal Equipment
■
Always use glasses with eye shields when working with optical fibres
■
Use powder free butyl rubber or nitrile disposable gloves
Method
■
Always cut the fibre (do not ‘snap’ it) to reduce the possibility of flying particles of glass.
■
Use only tools specified by Emtelle.
■
Place off-cuts in a closed container (CIN BIN)
■
Note spilled fibres create a slipping hazard on a hard surface.
■
The wearing of disposable lightweight powder free gloves when handling affords safety protection and prevents contamination of the product.
■
Never place fibres in your mouth.
■
Food and drink should not be consumed in the work area.
■
A doctor must treat eye injuries from glass fibres immediately.
■
Abrasions from cut or ground fibres should be treated promptly by thorough cleansing of the affected area.
■
Seek medical attention for prompt removal of any particles that may be embedded under the skin.
8.1 Emtelle Fibre Units (FU)
Emtelle manufacture high quality 8/125µm, 50/125µm and 62.5/125µm fibre units. Their make up is shown below. The coloured optical fibres are
encased in a thin-easy-to-remove acrylate resin and a non-bonded thermoplastic outer sheath with low friction properties.
The FUs have diameters which range from approximately 1mm to 1.6mm depending upon the fibre count. They are gel free, so require no solvent
cleaning before connection. Gel contamination in a primary m/d has been shown to give blowing failures even at short installation distances.
