12.2.4.14 Post-DSP Level Meter
The level meter reads the signal in the digital domain after the post-DSP insert
and before the fader and mute switch.
Stereo channels display a 2-channel meter.
12.2.4.15 Direct Output Buttons
These buttons select the source for the channel’s direct output. The pickoff point can be
either
PRE-DSP
or
POST-DSP
. These are the same points as the pre- and post-DSP Insert
sends. The direct output is an analog output located at the rear of the console.
12.2.4.16 Mute Groups
These buttons assign the channel to one of eight mute groups when
enabled. The mute group master buttons are located above the
Intelli-
gent Encoder
on the console control surface. Any channel can belong to
more than one mute group so the channel will remain muted as long as
any mute group to which it belongs is active. See also Section 12.9.6.
12.2.4.17 VCA Groups
In the UMX.96, VCA stands for Virtual Con-
trol Attenuator, whose action and usage
is the same as a VCA found in an analog
console. There are 16 VCA groups. The 16
VCA Group buttons assign the channel to
that numbered VCA.
Any channel can belong to more than
one VCA group. The actual gain value
for a channel assigned to one or more VCA Groups is the algebraic sum of its own fader and all of the VCA
master faders of the VCA groups to which it belongs.
Example 1:
Channel 5 belongs to VCA Groups 2, 4, and 5. All of the masters are set to 0 dB and the channel is
set to 0 dB. Channel 5’s VCA gain value is 0 dB.
Example 2:
Channel 5 again. All of the VCA masters (2, 4, and 5) are set to –3 dB and the channel is set to 0 dB.
Channel 5’s VCA gain value is –9 dB.
Example 3:
Channel 5 again. VCA masters 2 and 4 are set to –5 dB, VCA master 5 is set to infinity (off). Chan-
nel 5’s VCA gain value is infinity (off) because infinity is larger than any of the other settings, so it forces the
channel’s VCA to off.
You can access the VCA masters via the Channel Select screen as described in Section 12.2.1. From the
VCA Overview screen you can see the settings of all VCA masters at once, assign VCA masters to other VCA
groups and assign VCA masters to mute groups. See Section 12.2.41 for details.
