Considerations for a Q-Mux System
Below are a few of the items to consider when planning to implement a Q-Mux System.
3.1
Type of Inputs Required
What type of input IDMs are needed? Does the connection to the input IDM need to be
supervised? How far is the connection from the input to the IDM?
Generally, the length of the wire for the Input IDMs should be kept as short as possible,
definitely less than 10 feet. If the connection to the input IDM needs to be supervised, use the
Q-EOL IDM.
Consider using a Q-1CL latching input IDM for signals that change quickly. The Q-1CL will
latch the change and hold the change of the input till it is read by the Q-Node.
For installations with many inputs to be monitored in one location consider the Q-SNP bds
and mother bd. panels.
3.2
Is Additional Power required when using Output IDMs?
What are you trying to control? If it’s just one or two Leds, you can use a Q-I/O IDM and its
solid state output and power the Led from the TBUSS. That will only work if you only have
one or two Leds on at one time. Anything more than that will require additional power.
When using the Form C Relay IDMs, remember that each of them has a latched form C
relay. Each of the Relay IDMs charges a large on board capacitor from the TBUSS and uses
this capacitor to control the relay. The relay IDMs can only change states once every several
seconds. Each time it changes states it must recharge the capacitor from the TBUSS.
3.3
Wire Type & Length
The manual states that the TBUSS can support 99 IDMs on as much as 5000 feet of wire, but
that is in a perfect world scenario. There are many factors that will come into play when
determining how far you can really go and how many IDMs can be connected to the TBUSS.
1.
Size of wire
– The optimum wire size is 18 gauge twisted pair. Other types of wire
can be used but will greatly reduce how far you can go.
2.
What is the TBUSS running next to?
Are the TBUSS wires running by themselves
or are they running along with other noisy electrical wiring? This will have a big
impact on how well the Q-Mux system performs.
