2. The cLi+ indicates:
Lithium is a monovalent metal cation that is usually absent in the body. It is used for the
treatment of manic
– depressive psychosis. The drug produces important effects, but significant
clinical complications associated with its use may appear. Lithium binding to plasma proteins is
less than 10% and its half-life is 7
– 35 hours. Its elimination is mainly urinary (95 - 99% of daily
intake, after fixed state).
3. Reference range
Lithium has a very limited therapeutic range. The initial doses are between 0.80 and 1.20
mmol/L.
cLi+(aP) reference range (adults): 0.50 -1.00 mmol/L
During lithium treatment and during maintenance (prophylaxis) it is important to adjust the dose
to reach the required plasma levels, as lithium can cause acute toxicity if its concentration is just
above the therapeutic range (around 2.00 mmol/L, although some patients appear to be more
sensitive and have side effects such as tremors or confusion with even lower doses).

1. The pH indicates:
pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution, indicating the concentration of

3. Clinical interpretation
