3.2 Restrictions on use
• The $martline can
only be used once
. After each use the line has to be changed and the $martline inspected by an
approved body;
• The $martline is only approved for one person and a total weight between 30 and 140 kg ;
• The maximum height of descent is
80 metres
;
• The anchor point must accept loads of at least 1000 kg or be approved according to EN795;
• The anchor sling and the line must
not lie over sharp edges
that might cause damage or cutting;
• The $martline must not be used for fall arrest, only for descending .
3.3 Personal inspection of equipment before use
Before using the $martline kit, inspect:
• That the seal is intact
• That there is no visible damage on the equipment
• That there is no visible damage on other equipment to be used with the $martline
• That the descent line is long enough for the actual descent
3.4 Placement on the harness
The $martline kit is meant to be carried on the harness to be available if an emergency
situation arises, and it can be located at different places on the harness. We recommend
placing it at the back to avoid conflict with other equipment that might be in use.
3.5 Descending
1) Break the seal of the bag; twist the seal until it breaks.
2) Open the bag and read the short version of the user instructions if you are unsure about
correct use.
3) Detach the blue karabiner from the anchor sling. Place the
anchor sling around a struc-
ture and into the black karabiner (fig 1A). If the anchor sling is placed around a vertical
construction, detach the sling and place it twice around the pole and through its self again.
Then attach the black karabiner as shown in fig 1B. Ensure that the anchor sling locks in place.
The anchor point (1A, 1B, 1C) must be able to take a load of 10 kN (EN795).
4) Attach the $martline descender to a front attachment point of the harness (fig 2 – we recom-
mend the lower attachment point on the harness if there is one) with the blue karabiner. Ensure
that
both karabiners are locked off .
5) Take up any slack in the line by pulling the free end of the line towards the anchor until the
line is tight. Sit down carefully until your full weight is taken up by the line. Do not expose
the equipment to dynamic loads.
6) Ensure that the descent is not in conflict with moveable machinery, obstacles or live cable.
The line must not lie over sharp edges. It is advisable to take the line out of the bag and
drop it to the ground if you are unsure about the line reaching the ground. This must not
be done if the line can get stuck on moveable machinery or other obstacles.

The speed of the descent is control-
led by the handle and by the rope
entering the slot. When moving the
handle upwards or releasing it, the
descent is stopped. Additional friction
is given by moving the line into the
slot. During descent: always keep one
hand on the handle and the other hand
on the line below the device.

If the karabiner in the descender
has been dismounted, the line
may have shifted so that the set
no longer functions safely. Re-
member to check that both ends
of the line come out on the same
side, i.e. the upper side. If you
are unsure about how it should
look, check figure 3 or the short
version of the user instructionl.
WaRnInG!
If the anchor sling is being used as shown
in figure 1B, you have to ensure that the
sling tightens around the pole. If the pole
is icy or particularly slippery, the result
might be that the sling slides down.
From 2012 the Smartline sling is longer
(160 cm) to make it possible to go twice
around the pole before choking. This re-
moves the possibility of slippage under
most conditions.
