Figure 8
This illustration shows an alternati-
vely method for lifting, to transfer the
load onto the $martline. This method
assumes that the rescuer is climbing
down together with the person being
rescued (or descending with a sepa-
rate $martline), while operating the
$martline.
Figure 7
Using the $martline descender as a
pulley system to take the load of a
person hanging in a none-adjustable
fall protection equipment.
8) The speed of the descent is regulated with one hand on the handle and the other hand holding
the line below the device. Start with the line at an angle out of the slot. With the descender
upside down, the descent starts by pulling the handle upwards (figure 6), and stops when
moving the handle downwards or by releasing it. Additional friction is given by moving the
line into the slot. It is important to always keep one hand on the line below the device to have
better control of the descent
9) Ensure that the descent is not in conflict with moveable machinery, obstacles or live cable.
The line must not lie over sharp edges.
10) Once the person is safely on the ground, give necessary medical assistance and call for help.
Detach the rope from the harness. If this is difficult, cut the rope with the enclosed knife.
4 Care of equipment
4.1 Storage
The $martline must not be exposed to chemicals or stored together with chemicals. It shall
be protected from strong heat, UV light, high humidity, sharp edges or other influences that
can affect the security of the equipment.
It is important that the line is stored in the bag, away from light.
4.2 Maintenance
As the $martline was designed for single use only, there is no need for maintenance. If there
are concerns about humidity in the bag or possible damage to the equipment, it must be
inspected according to 4.4. All reparations or alterations have to be done by a body approved
by the manufacturer.
4.3 Transport
During transport the $martline must not be exposed to sharp items, chemicals, UV-light, or
other influences that may cause damage. It must also be protected against falls, crush and
shock damages.
4.4 Inspection of equipment
Personal inspection before use is described in clause 3.3.
The $martline has to undergo periodic inspection by a competent person at least once a year.
This person must be familiar with inspecting all the components in the set, and must know
in detail how the set works, and how the knots should look. The set must always be opened
during periodic inspection. Repairs and replacement of parts can only be done by Cresto AB
or a body approved by Cresto AB.
The equipment log on the last page must be updated with all periodic inspec-
tions, change of parts, number on the seal, and other matters concerning the safe
use of the equipment.
A checklist for the periodic inspection of the Smartline can be acquired from
Cresto AB (30-TEC-FO-001-017e) along with new seals for sealing the bag after
inspection.
4.5 Lifespan
If stored and maintained according to these instructions, the line has a maximum
lifetime of 7 years. Other components will have a maximum lifetime of 10 years.
If in doubt of the safe function of a component, the $martline shall be withdrawn
from service. All maintenance or alterations have to be done by the manufacturer
or a body approved by the manufacturer.
