6.7 Addressess
All KPAs are addressed in a command by the Device Address. The Device Address
consists of a physical address or a physical address plus a virtual address.
6.7.1 Physical Address
Each KPA in the system must have a unique physical address regardless of the access
method used. The physical address consists of a string of 1, 2 or 3 numbers from 1 to
256. The physical address is entered into a KPA via the front panel. For Direct Access,
the physical address is the only address required to command a KPA. A backup KPA or a
stand-alone KPA can only be accessed with a physical address.
For Example: 10 Addresses KPA whose physical address is 10.
6.7.2 Virtual Address
In order to access an KPA controlled by a backup KPA indirectly, a virtual address is
required. A virtual address is appended to the physical address of the backup KPA with a
“V”. The virtual address is either the number “1" or “2" corresponding to the KPA’s
designation in a redundant subsystem.
For Example: 10V2 Addresses second KPA in a 1:2
redundant subsystem controlled by
the backup KPA whose physical address is 10.
6.7.3 Message Structure
The structure of either a Command, Response, or Error Message is as follows:

6.7.4 Start Character
The Start Character begins each message:
For Example: < Start of a user Command.
> Start of a KPA response.
