BICYCLE MAINTENANCE
BICYCLE MAINTENANCE
Carrying out regular bicycle maintenance will mean that your bike lives for
longer, performs at its best and therefore enables you to ride in complete
safety.
IMPORTANT
Like all mechanical components, your bicycle will need a running-in period. The spoke tension
will become uniform, the cables will stretch a bit, and the mechanical elements will settle in
place. So even if you don’t come across any problems it is essential that you get your bike
checked by a professional once you’ve done either 300km of riding or a dozen rides.
After each ride in the rain, or when your bicycle is dirty, it is important to
clean it correctly. Do not use a high-pressure water hose as this can result
in water infiltrating various mechanisms, which can result in damage to
your bicycle. Use a soft brush and a biodegradable degreaser. After having
rinsed your bicycle, it is important that you dry it. Shake it to get rid of any
excess water and then wipe it down with a dry cloth. You can also remove
the seatpost so that any water in the frame drain.
WARNING! After each wash, inspect the welds on your frame to check for
any eventual cracks or fissures.
LUBRIFICATION
The transmission elements (chain, cassette, chainrings) require your
complete attention. They need to be perfectly clean and constantly oiled.
After each wash, each ride in the wet or when your chain is dry, make
sure you lubricate it with oil recommended for that part. If the chain is not
perfectly clean, clean it with a biodegradable degreaser. Once the oil has
been applied, turn the pedals and go through the gears so that it spreads
over the entire transmission. Wipe off any excess oil with a cloth, so that it
does not flick off onto the rest of your bike whilst riding.
WARNING! Make sure no oil gets onto the wheels or brake discs as this will
considerably reduce their efficiency and can become dangerous or contaminated
by the oil.
TIP! Your bicycle has sealed bearings. It is therefore unnecessary to either grease
or lubricate them. To maintain these types of bearings requires special tools and
know-how.
