Installation Prerequisites

Figure 7 shows the fiber-optic MIC used for network and chassis connections with the APP-LMM,
APP-LMS, and APP-LSM FDDI appliques.

Installation Prerequisites
Following are safety guidelines, system configuration and compatibility requirements, and lists of
the parts and tools required for installation. Before installing any FDDI cards or appliques, review
this section to ensure that you can perform the installation or upgrade without interruption.
Safety
Follow these guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:
•
Before beginning any procedures requiring access to the chassis interior, turn OFF the system
power and disconnect the power cord.
•
Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit; always check.
•
Do not work alone when a potentially hazardous condition exists.
•
Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard to people or makes the equipment
unsafe.
•
Carefully examine your work area for possible hazards such as moist floors, ungrounded wiring
or power cables, and missing safety grounds.
In addition, use the guidelines that follow when working with any equipment that is connected to
telephone wiring or other network cabling.
•
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
•
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet
locations.
•
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.
•
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
Warning
Invisible laser radiation may be emitted from the aperture ports of the single-mode
appliques when no fiber cable is connected. Avoid exposure and do not stare into open apertures.
This product meets the Class 1 Laser Emission Requirement from CDRH FDDI.
