Glossary
The terms defined in this glossary may or may
not be found in this manual but are generally
found in Ciena Corporation documentation.
A
Active
refers to the Control Module that is
operationally controlling the system.
Alarm
is classified as either an audible or visible
warning notice that is triggered by an event or
error condition.
B
Backup
is a redundancy state mode indicating
that the Standby Control Module is ready to
manage the system in the event that the Active
Control Module should failover.
Broadcast Containment
prevents services
from being disrupted by broadcast storms by
creating Broadcast Containment filters and
applying them to VLANs or virtual switches.
Broadcast Storm
occurs when a large number
of broadcast packets are unnecessarily
propagated across a network which can
degrade performance or even deny service.
Broadcast storms are often associated with
denial-of-service attacks, network
reconvergence, and loops in the network.
C
CESS
(Carrier Ethernet Service Switching) is a
device the provides the following functions: 1)
aggregates, distributes and delivers Carrier
Ethernet Business, Residential and Transport
services, from the edge of the metro/core to
the customer, 2) enables programmable
service delivery, providing capacity,
performance and resiliency, through the
integration of Ethernet Services Management
(ESM), common Service Aware Operation
System (SAOS) and programmable network
devices.
Channel Stream
is a collection of user-defined
multicast groups that are flooded to all ports in
a VLAN, bringing these streams far down into
the network before they are requested by an
IGMP host, thus reducing latency.
CIR
(Committed Information Rate) is a
designated value that represents the minimum
guaranteed bandwidth for network traffic flows
that are transmitted and received under
normal operating conditions.
Command File
contains a set of instructions
on how to deliver the various system software
to Ciena switch.
Condition
refers to an occurrence within the
system that exists for a period of time that may
be of interest to the user or operator. A
condition that persists for an extended period
of time may be re-classified as an Event.
COS
(Class of Service) divides services into
different levels of priority in order make
forwarding decisions when network congestion
occurs.
E
Egress
refers to network traffic being sent out
of a device or the exit point from a network
device.
EIR
(Excess Information Rate) is a designated
value, in excess of the CIR, that represents an
allowance of burstable bandwidth for network
traffic flows that are transmitted and received
under bursty operating conditions.
EPR
(Egress Port Restriction) restricts cross-
talk between ports on the same device within a
shared VLAN by blocking ARP messages.
Event
typically refers to an error condition in
the system that has an associated severity.
Events can be logged into either the SYSLOG,
RAM, or Compact Flash via the event logging
system. In addition, some events are
converted into SNMP traps.
