ONFIGURATION
Use the following procedure to install a fiber optic cable:
NOTE: Do not remove the dust covers from the SFP/XFP and optical cable until
immediately prior to mating the connectors.
1. Clean both the port and the connector using standard local practices. If alcohol is
used as part of the cleaning process, use canned compressed air to blow dry the
surfaces you have just cleaned.
2. Insert the connector into the port on the device until you hear a clicking sound.
3. Insert the tail end of the cable into the port on the terminating device.
The optical cable is now installed. The port is automatically activated when the XFP/SFP
transceiver is installed. Assuming the terminating device is connected, the Link LED for
the port should become activated. See Appendix A, “LED Overview” on page 39 for more
information.
Cat 5e Cables
There are two types of ports on the CN 3960 that have RJ-45 jacks:
•
10/100/1000 Mbps subscriber ports
•
Local Management Port
NOTE: Ciena recommends the use of Shielded Cat 5e+ cable or better.
To install a Shielded Cat 5e cable, insert the connector into the port on the device until
you hear a clicking sound. Insert the tail end of the cable into the port on the terminating
device.
Initial Configuration
Two different methods can be used to assign an IP address to the device. The
recommended method is for the device to receive its IP address and other information
automatically using a DHCP server. Alternatively, an IP address can be configured
manually using the CLI. If additional information on configuring an IP address is needed,
contact Customer Support.
NOTE: If the device has not been assigned an IP address (either manually or through a
DHCP server) other than the default IP address, communication can only take place
through the local management or console port. Initial IP address configuration must
therefore be done through one of these two ports.
CAUTION: Use caution when setting an IP address or subnet mask, the new value takes
effect immediately. If information is set that is inconsistent with network settings,
communication with the device may no longer be possible. If all other troubleshooting
methods have been exhausted, recovery may be possible using the Reset button.
