Do Not:
•
Use electrical tape or any other type of tape to secure cables.
•
Run cable in power conduits or air plenums.
•
Overstress cables by overtightening cable ties or stapling cables to the point where
crushing is visible. This is particularly applicable for fiber optic cables.
•
Exceed the minimum bending radius for fiber optic cables.
•
Install cables near sources of electrical interference. All twisted pair wires (Shielded
Cat 5e cables) must be at least 3 feet away from fluorescent light boxes and other
sources of electrical interference such as a power source.
NOTE: Fiber optic cables are not affected by electrical interference.
Connecting Cables to the CN 3960
When connecting cables to the CN 3960, always make only one connection at a time.
Ciena recommends that cables be connected in the following order:
•
Fiber cables first
•
Shielded Cat 5e cables last
In order for two devices to communicate properly, the transmit ports on the first device
must be connected to the receive ports of the second device.
Fiber Optic Cables
There are two types of ports on the CN 3960 that accept pluggable optics:
•
10 Gigabit Ethernet port with XFP connectors
•
10/100/1000 Mbps subscriber ports with SFP connectors
NOTE: The subscriber ports have a dual connector and can use both a pluggable SFP or
an RJ-45. For more information see the
10/100/1000 Mbps Ports section on page 13.
The XFP/SFP pluggables in the CN 3960 allow you to select the port speed, wavelength,
etc to match the device on the terminating end. See the
XFP / SFP Transceivers section
on page 32 for more information about the transceivers, and their installation.
The ports with XFP/SFPs will require optical cables. You will need to know the
specification of the optic to select the appropriate cable.
