8 Maintenance and care of Merlin LT
8.1 General
Any attempt to dismantle or repair the Merlin LT system and accessories by unauthorised personnel can be
hazardous and costly. Maintenance carried out by the operator should be restricted to the cleaning and inspection
of external surfaces, lenses and operating controls.
8.2 Preventative maintenance
Preventative maintenance should include the following.
8.2.1 In use
•
Avoid directing the Merlin LT laser towards the sun or other high-powered, infrared light sources.
•
Avoid mechanical shock.
•
The Merlin LT system is approved to IP66 EN 60529 : 1992 + A1 : 2002 and EN 60945 : 2002. It must not
be submerged.
•
Clean and dry the equipment before, during and after use. Use dedicated lens-cleaning wipes to clean the
windows on the laser module.
•
Ensure the locking screws are securely in place so that the Merlin LT vertical motion is locked when in use
or when being moved.
•
When moving the Merlin LT, use the A-frame to carry and support the Merlin LT wherever possible.
•
Do not use paint solvents to clean the outer structure of the instrument. Use a mild detergent to clean the
outer structure of the system or HPLC-grade isopropyl alcohol (propan-2-ol) solution, applied with a lint-
free cloth, to clean the lenses.
8.2.2 In storage
•
Dry the system thoroughly before storing.
•
Correctly pack the equipment in the protective containers/wraps provided.
•
If the equipment remains unused for several weeks, it is advisable to disconnect any power sources.
•
Store within the environmental temperature limits of −25°C to +70°C.
8.2.3 In transportation
Correctly pack the equipment in the supplied transit case for transportation. Do not allow the equipment to slide
around inside transport vehicles or containers.
8.2.4 General
Carry out regular functional testing of the system. Detect and report damage, malfunctions and poor performance
to a Carlson-approved service centre.
It is advised to arrange an annual service and calibration. Contact Carlson for details.
