To understand if timing is being successfully received and processed by the Merlin LT, the Merlin diagnostic tool
displays three main indicators:
•
Status;
•
Time source;
•
Time (UTC).
For these three indicators to be active, the Merlin LT must be connected and the laser rotating.
7.6.1 Possible scenarios
Table 7 and the following text and screenshots highlight the possible scenarios relating to timing received by the
Merlin LT.

•
For survey operations, the only acceptable Status message is
Running (GPS….)
. If the Time source is
shown as
GPS
, both a valid PPS and ZDA message are being received. (* After ‘GPS’ the selected timing
source is indicated, e.g. Trimble Applanix.). See Figure 41
•
If the Status is
Running (synced, no GPS)
this means the Time source has been
GPS
but that a GPS
outage has occurred: see Figure 42
The laser data continues to be time-tagged but a valid GPS sync is
not present. The Status reverts to
Running (uninitialised)
after 30 seconds.
.
•
If the Status has been displayed as
Running (uninitialised)
from initial power-up, the Time source is
Not
Receiving GPS
, but the Time (UTC) is the current date and time, this indicates an issue with PPS. See
•
If the Status has been displayed as
Running (uninitialised)
from initial power-up, the Time source is
Not
Receiving GPS
, the Time (UTC) is 01/01/2000 00:00:00.000, this indicates no valid timing is being
received. See Figure 44
•
If Status is
Invalid Time
a ZDA message is being received but the protocol is set incorrectly. For example,
if the protocol is set at Merlin (Trimble ZDA) but a Trimble Applanix protocol is being supplied, this would
result in an invalid timing message. See Figure 46
