2.1.2 Smoothing processing
When image data of a resolution lower than even that of the printer is
printed, the oblique or curved sections of the image become jagged. The
function for removing these jagged parts to smooth oblique or curved sec-
tions is called “smoothing.” Smoothing is performed only on binary
images and not on images containing half-tones.
In the following example, let’s describe how smoothing is performed when
image data of a standard resolution is printed on a fine-resolution printer.
The focus is applied to a certain single pixel. When smoothing is per-
formed on that pixel, a pixel pattern enclosed by a dashed line is refer-
enced.

Whether or not the smoothing judgment pattern matches the pixel pattern
enclosed by the dashed line is investigated. If it matches, the focus pixel is
converted according to the smoothing conversion pattern.
