This section describes how to wire alarms and external (BITS) timing interfaces to the Calix
E7-20. The E7-20 terminates its alarm and timing interfaces via wire-wrap pins located on
the E7-20 rear panel.
Wiring!External!Alarms!
Wire the E7-20 audible and visual alarms to a central office alarm system as described below.
Use 26 AWG minimum (19 AWG maximum) wire.
There are three pairs of standard wire-wrap pin alarm connections for the output alarms:
Critical, Major, and Minor. The output alarms are connected through the backplane and fan
tray to LEDs on the front of the fan tray. The E7-20 alarm contacts are Normally Open
(default). The circuit closes when an alarm condition occurs.

1.!
Remove the rear panel access cover by unscrewing its two captive screws and detaching it
from the rear of the chassis.
2.!
Strip insulation from the ends of the three wire pairs to connect to the unit.
3.!
Route and dress three pairs of wires – one pair each for the Major, Minor, and Critical
alarms – from the E7-20 rear panel to the office alarm system.
4.!
Route and dress the alarm wires out to the appropriate far-end interfaces and connect per
local practice.
Refer to the
Calix
E7-20 User Guide
for supported alarms and alarm provisioning
information.
Note:
Although there are wire-wrap pins on the back panel for outside plant (OSP)
environmental alarms, the E7-20 does not currently support alarms for remote cabinets, as
the E7-20 is intended for Central Office deployments only.
