Brakes
The brakes are clearly a fundamental ele-
ment when cycling. Is the bike equipped with
hand brakes? Use the left lever to control
the rear brake and the right lever to control
the front brake. Is your bike equipped with a
coaster brake? Then you only have to pedal
backwards to slow down or stop entirely.

Note: Does your bike have a suspen-
sion fork? We advise you to always use
your brakes at the same time: both front
and rear brake. The suspension in the fork
allows you to generate a forward and
downward movement that can be very
dangerous when making turns.
V-Brake: when braking with v-brakes, the
brake pads are pushed against the rim, which
slows down the bike. That makes these brake
pads susceptible to erosion and need to be
replaced in time. When you notice that the
brake force is decreasing, it’s most likely time
to replace the pads. You can schedule an
appointment at a service point.
Rollerbrake: rollerbrakes are like drum brakes.
The drum brake is located in the center of the
wheel. Rollerbrakes brake with internal rollers,
which push against a so-called ‘brake shoe’.
Rollerbrakes require very low maintenance,
however, for extra safety they must be main-
tained or repaired by a specialist: repairing
the brakes youself can seriously damage the
brake!
Hydraulic rim brake: with hydraulic rim bra-
kes, the brake pads are also pushed against
the rim to brake. A decrease in braking force
may indicate air in the pipes or worn-out
brake pads: schedule an appointment at one
of the service points.
Hydraulic disc brake: this system makes
use of brake discs and cables that contain
hydraulic fluid. By squeezing the levers on
the handlebars, a strong braking force will
be created. A decrease in braking force may
indicate air in the pipes: plan an appointment
at a service point.

NOTE: do you want to maintain your
hydraulic disc or rim brakes? Then make
sure that there is no oil, grease or wax on
the brake discs. Do you see any oil traces
that you haven’t caused yourself? Make an
appointment at a service point, your bike
may have a leakage.
Coaster brake: You do not have to carry out
maintenance on a coaster brake. Is the brake
force decreasing? Make an appointment at a
service point: only a specialist can fix this.
