Vent Pipe Preparation and Joining
Most f ailures in vent syst ems result f rom improper preparat ion and joining
of pipe and f it t ings. The guidelines below must be f ollow ed w hen inst alling
t he vent ing syst em. If you have any quest ion about t he applicat ion or
inst allat ion of t he vent ing syst em, cont act t he vent pipe manuf act urer,
supplier, or your plumbing prof essional.
1) Specif ic cleaners, solvent s, primers and cement s are available f or PVC,
CPVC, and ABS pipe. Be sure t hese mat erials mat ch t he t ype of pipe t o
be inst alled. The vent pipe manuf act urers joining inst ruct ions must be
f ollow ed in all cases. Never use all-purpose cement s, commercial glues
and adhesives or ABS cement t o join PVC or CPVC pipe and f it t ings.

a)
CLEANERS, SOLVENTS, PRIMERS AND CEMENTS ARE
FLAMMABLE. Do not store or use these materials near heat or
open flame, or in the vicinity of other appliances.
2) Use proper cut t ing, deburring and applicat or t ools t o ensure proper
preparat ion and joining of pipe and f it t ings.
a) Cut t ing Tools
i) A square cut must be achieved w it h a mit er box saw or pipe
cut t er t o ensure a proper mat ing w it h t he f emale. If a pipe
cut t er is used, t he burr creat ed at t he out er edge of t he pipe
must be removed.
b) Deburring Tools
i) A f ile, knif e or plast ic deburring t ool can be used t o remove
burrs. Burrs must be removed f rom t he inside and out side
edges of t he pipe t o ensure a proper seal.
c) Applicat or Tools
i) A nat ural brist le paint brush or roller may be used t o apply
cement . Prompt applicat ion of t he cement is import ant due it s
f ast drying propert ies.
3) Inspect ion, Cleaning, Priming and Cement ing
a) Inspect t he pipe inside and out f or dirt , dust , moist ure or grease
et c. Check pipe and f it t ings f or split s or cracks and replace if
f ound.
b) Clean pipe and f it t ings are imperat ive f or proper joining. Follow ing
cut t ing and deburring, w ipe aw ay any f oreign mat erial w it h a clean
dry rag. If w iping f ails t o t horoughly clean surf aces, chemical
cleaning is necessary.
c) Primer must be applied t o t he pipe surf ace and f it t ing socket w it h a
nat ural brist le brush. This serves t o sof t en and prepare t he pipe f or
cement ing.
