CPT Code 20974
Electrical Stimulation to Aid Bone
Healing: Non-Invasive (Non-Operative)
From a CPT perspective, an additional
evaluation and management service (E/M
- office visit code) is generally not payable;
unless
• the physician is providing a significant,
separately identifiable E/M service
beyond the noninvasive electrical bone
stimulation; or,
• beyond the usual postoperative care
associated with the procedure(s)
performed; and,
• the physician is providing and meeting
the three, key components (e.g., history,
examination and medical decision
making).
Once these additional requirements are met,
then the appropriate level of E/M service with
the modifier-25 amended, may be reported in
addition to CPT code 20974.
CPT 20974 is exempt from the use of
modifier-51 (multiple procedures) for services
performed on the same day or at the same
session by the same provider.
