ANALOG VARIATIONS
0BDNP3 PROTOCOL PROFILE
Warning: DNP3 level 2 defines only the first point and using the capacities of a master
station of the mentioned level only this first pint can be accessed. In order to read points
beyond the first and additional capacity is required at the master station. The table only
contains an additional point that expresses the date of the last fault registered.
This date can be recovered by other means such as configuring in the binary inputs map
the signal rAnyTrip or directly the entry that reflects the status of the output that trips the
breaker (rOUT<x> where x is the output that handles it). This way the master station is
sable to know the moment of occurrence of the last fault. Since the use of different
qualifiers is not strictly necessary for level 2, the compatibility with master stations for
this level of the protocol is not broken so a level 2 master station can handle the smART
P500 as well.

4.6. ANALOG VARIATIONS
The smART P500 can return the status of its analog inputs using 16 and 32 bits variations.
In fact, using the proART® software, the user can define the variation that the smART
P500 uses when asked, using the variation 0(as a default value), choosing between 16 and
32 bits.
In fact nearly all the analog variables information is in 32 bits. For example, the voltages
are reported in mV, currents in mA and power in W. By restricting the representation to 16
bits will, almost always, cause an overflow (since more than 16 bits are required to
represent it). Because there are applications that can not handle 32-bit values, there is a
mechanism to scale the reported magnitudes.
For this mechanism to work, at the screen for communications setup in the proART®
software, set the behaviour of 16-bit analog as “Scale” and not “Overflow Flag”. This
behaviour is opposite to the spirit of DNP3, which requests that representations of 16 and
32 bits are unique and that if the value cannot be represented it is marked as “Overflow”.
