Heartbeat (Appliance ports)
The Heartbeat panel is displayed on the right side of the Port Properties dialog by right-clicking
an Appliance port and selecting Port Properties.
The Heartbeat panel provides the user with the option of enabling or disabling the insertion of
heartbeat packets into the traffic stream of an Appliance port pair. If enabled, the monitor
mode can be set to Internal, External, or Link. Internal being an internally generated heartbeat
pulse, External being a user defined Packet Type, and Link being the link status on either
ingress or egress.
If Monitor Mode is set to:
• Internal – The Failover Condition sliders specify the number of heartbeats to be Sent
at the specified Interval. If the number of heartbeats specified by Missed occurs
within the specified Interval period, the aggregation goes into Bypass mode.
• External – The Packet Type pull-down allows the creation or selection of user defined
Packet Type filters.
• Link – If there is a loss of link, the aggregation goes into Bypass mode.
The heartbeat can be enabled, or disabled, independently of the Port Mode setting (refer to
Network port settings (Network ports)
on page 45). For example, Monitor mode can be
enabled without enabling the heartbeat.
The heartbeat cannot be enabled unless the Appliance ports are paired.
NOTE
External heartbeat filters behave differently than regular filters when applied
to an active port. Regular filters are automatically reloaded on ports when the
filter is updated. External heartbeat filters are reloaded on Appliance ports
when the heartbeat is disabled and then enabled. Otherwise, the old filter is
kept active on the ports until the heartbeat is automatically toggled.
