RECOMMENDATIONS AND HINDRANCES
FOR USING THE STANDING FUNCTION
The following is based on general observations. The circumstances
for which the standing function is used, are different for every
user. Only a doctor or therapist are qualified to work with the user
to determine what is the appropriate standing training and/or
frequency required.
1. RECOMMENDATIONS
The standing function on Amylior power wheelchairs is
precisely designed to help people who are unable to stand
on their own. Individuals with conditions such as spinal cord
injury (paraplegia), multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, cerebral
palsy, polio, etc. for which standing is used as therapy or to
prevent certain diseases and disorders such as:
• Osteoporosis:
Standing helps prevent the decrease of
bone density which reduces the risk of fractures
or other complications.
• Tonus regulation of spasticity:
Regular standing will
help manage spasticity and movement in the wheelchair
or bed and will promote a restful sleep.
• Decubitus prophylaxis:
This technical term for
pressure ulcers or bed sores, can be reduced with
regular standing as the pressure is off the sit bones
(ischial tuberosity).
• Skeletal misalignments:
Whether it is the spine, the hip
or other skeletal parts that are misaligned, standing will
help the natural posture of the body, improve upper body
stability and prevent the risk of scoliosis and back pain.
• Muscular atrophy:
Muscle shortening may lead to
contractures when legs do not move regurlarly. Standing
is a way to create leg movement to avoid possible pain
associated with contractures.
• Gastrointestinal problems:
Standing eases pressure
on the entire digestive system, helps the flow and
improves bowel and bladder movement.
• Respiratory difficulties
: By standing, the torso
expands to alleviate the pressure on the lungs from the
abdominal cavity organs. It promotes deeper breathing
and improves respiration. It may also reduce the risk
of lung infection.
2. HINDRANCES
The standing function on a power wheelchair can only be
prescribed by a doctor, ATP or qualified therapist. Standing
may not be recommended for certain conditions. The
following are hindrances for using the standing function:
• Osteopenia or low bone density:
It is not
recommended to stand if your bones are very weak. If
this is the case, it can cause fractures. For your safety,
it is recommended to consult a doctor for bone density
measurement.
• Severe muscle contractures or mobility
limitations:
Limited or reduced functional range of
motion may prevent the user from standing. In this case,
using the standing function is not recommended.
• Blood circulation:
Whether it is heart disease or poor
circulation, standing with these deficiencies should only
occur under the supervision of a qualified
medical professional.

PROMOTES WELL-BEING
Studies have shown that the activity of moving from sitting to
standing can be beneficial for users that are unable to do so on
their own. Some benefits are:
1. Being able to reach cabinets or other equipment in the
workplace; to access cupboards, ovens or shelves at home;
to dialogue at eye-level with people; to regain confidence
and independence.
2. The simple movement of standing up from a seated position
can improve a person’s range of motion, bone density, blood
circulation, bowel and bladder function, etc.

WARNING
The use of the standing function can only be prescribed by a
medical professional. Introduction to regular standing should be
done under the supervision of a qualified therapist.
BEFORE using the standing function, the user MUST attach chest
strap & pelvic belt AND use knee support & strap.
KNOW WHEN TO STOP USING
THE STANDING FUNCTION
All users are different and have different health issues. Using
the standing function can only be prescribed by a healthcare
professional and regular standing training done under the
supervision of a qualified therapist.
There are risks to using the standing function. If by using the
standing function, any of the following symptoms are visible,
stop using the standing function immediately and consult your
healthcare professional:
• Redness appear on your feet or legs
• Discomfort
• Dizziness or nausea
A user's health or condition can change anytime, be aware
that consulting a healthcare professional and/or therapist on a
regular basis is requires even if the change seem minor.
