Appendix C: Common CCTV Practices
The purpose of Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) is to make visual information of a
specific area available for viewing by a security operator. A CCTV system is
thus a “visual assessment” tool. The lens and angle of the viewing determine
the amount of information obtained, not by the camera. A CCTV system
must also have a means to record events that can later be used for training or
as evidence.
C.1 Lighting Characteristics
The lighting at the scene determines the amount of light reaching the camera
lens. While light can be created from any source, factors affecting the quality
of the image are:
•
beam angle over which the source radiates
•
light intensity, reflection, and contrast
•
any lighting variations or obstruction at the light source
•
location of the CCTV cameras
•
complexity and motion at the scene
Recommended light levels are shown in Table 1.
