PROGRAMMING AND OPERA
TION FOR PID
Theory of Operation
The
PID method of contr
ol is based on the individual tuning of pr
oportional
band values, integral time values, and derivative time values to help a unit
automatically compensate for changes in a contr
ol system. The pr
oportional
band is the range ar
ound the set point in which the contr
ol’
s pr
oportioning
takes place. The contr
ol incr
eases or decr
eases the output pr
oportionately
to the pr
ocess temperatur
e’
s deviation fr
om the set point. The integral time
eliminates undershoot and overshoot of the set point by adjusting the
pr
oportioning contr
ol based on the amount of deviation fr
om the set point
during steady state operation. The derivative time eliminates undershoot and
overshoot by adjusting the pr
oportioning contr
ol based on the rate of rise or
fall of the pr
ocess temperatur
e. The integral deviation of
fset corr
ection (ioFn)
impr
oves the speed in which the pr
ocess value r
eaches the set point value.
If this parameter is set to zer
o, the output will be zer
o when the pr
ocess
value is equal to the set point value. If the integral time parameter is used
only to eliminate steady state err
or
, it may take a long time to r
each the set
point because it needs time to accumulate the err
or
. This parameter defines
the default output level on start up. When the integral time is set at 0, then
the pr
oportional derivative of
fset corr
ection (PdoF) would r
e
place the integral
deviation of
fset corr
ection, but serves the same function.
Pr
ogram Set Up
In or
der to use the PID function in the C series contr
ollers, the Contr
ol Mode
will have to be set to PID in the Initial Setting Menu. After changing the
Contr
ol Mode, the PID parameters can be accessed in the Regulation Menu.
The PID parameters can either be pr
ogrammed manually or they can be set
by the contr
oller using the auto tune function. The auto tune will use trial and
err
or to tune the PID parameters to give the contr
ol the most pr
ecise contr
ol.
Since the time to accurately tune the contr
ol may dif
fer depending on the
pr
ocess, the contr
oller can also be manually tuned to known PID values
prior to running auto tune. The Run/Stop parameter must be set to run in
or
der to start auto tuning.

DESCRIPTION OF MENU STRUCTURE
The pr
ogramming for the contr
oller is br
oken down into thr
ee menus
(Operation, Regulation, and Initial Setting). Upon normal operation, contr
ol
will be in the Operation Menu.
OPERA
TION MENU
Pr
essing the INDEX key will cycle thr
ough the below menu items. The
parameter will be displayed in the top display
, while its value will be
displayed in the bottom display
, except for the set point which is displayed
in the bottom display on the Home Display
. The UP and DOWN arr
ows
change the values of the parameters. The ENTER key must be pr
essed after
any changes.
Adjust the set point value - Can be any numerical value
between the upper and lower limit of the temperatur
e range.
Select Run - Stop Output Contr
