The system is also designed to
mitigate charge from a freshly
cut block face, not repetitive
scanning.
Confirm the ultramicrotome is
cutting the ROI. The gas flow
required for repeated scanning
is not the same as for a fresh
block surface.
The nozzle does not re-
turn to the same place.
There could be various factors
affecting the mechanical oper-
ation.
Ensure the nozzle cannot hit
the specimen or the BSE de-
tector. Ensure the nozzle is
clamped adequately with the
star screw.
Ensure the silicone hose does
not create strain to the nozzle
throughout the swing-arm
movement.
When at high vacuum
and Focal CC is turned
off, the vacuum condi-
tions in the column are
poor.
The ion pump has a limited
lifespan when the Focal CC is
used for extended periods.
Contact a ZEISS service repre-
sentative. Refer to
When acquiring single
area 3D data sets, the im-
age is distorted at the be-
ginning of the scan after
the beam is unblanked.
The equilibrium ionized gas
cloud is disturbed when the
beam is blanked. The amount
of time taken to restore equi-
librium depends on the charge
compensation required.
Disable the beam blanking in
SmartSEM so that the equilib-
rium is not disturbed. Set the
scan speed to 1.
Alternatively, setup a multi ROI
acquisition instead and discard
a small sacrificial ROI which is
only used to restore equilib-
rium after the beam is un-
blanked.
