Appendix D Glossary
PDF File
PDF is the acronym for Portable Document Format.
A PDF file can be created by using the Acrobat
software developed by Adobe Systems
Incorporated. PDF files are online documents and
you need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader in
order to view or print them.
Plug and Play
This function is adopted in Windows 95 and
Windows 98 where it allows the computer to
configure itself to work with peripheral equipment.
Port
This is the connection part for exchanges between
the computer and peripherals.
Print Queue
When data are received from the computer to be
printed to a designated printer, these data are stored
temporarily in the print queue.
Printer Driver
This is the software for converting data created with
an application to data that can be interpreted by the
printer.
Protocol
This is a set of rules for regulating the
communications amongst multiple devices and
computer systems, for example, the transmission of
information between hardware, the communications
between two computers via the network and so
forth.
Resolution
It refers to the image quality. It shows how many
dots can be represented in a one-inch width area
(dpi). The higher the number, the better the image
quality.
SDRAM
This is the acronym for Synchronous DRAM. It is a
dynamic random access memory device that is
much faster than the conventional DRAM in read
and write access.
SMB
This is a network communications mode for sending
data via the Windows network (Microsoft network).
It can be used on Windows 95, Window 98, and
Windows NT 4.0.
Server
On a network, the server is sued for storing data to
be used by other computers. Computers accessing
this server are called the clients.
SNMP
This is the acronym for Simple Network
Management Protocol. Through the network, this
protocol manages the devices connected to the
network.
This is done on the managing side with SNMP
Manager and on the managed side with SNMP agent
software.
Sort
The printer can print multiple sets of a document
and arrange them in order like 1, 2, 3... 1, 2, 3. This
is the "sort" function.
