temperatures
the temperature stated of the type plate of the piLZ
®
heating mantle represents the max. permissible surface temperature of the heating appliance. the operator must
take appropriate measures to ensure that this temperature is not exceeded at any point.
caution: in the case of operation without temperature control
there is a risk that the max. operating temperature will be exceeded.
this can be caused by:
Heat concentration because of empty or partially filled vessels, varying filling levels and changes in ambient conditions (temperatures). PILZ
®
heating mantles are
damaged or even destroyed by excessive temperatures (fire risk). Furthermore, it should be realized that the stipulated temperature range will also be exceeded if the
heating systems are operated with unsuitable or incorrectly set temperature controllers and temperature sensors. For safety reasons, piLZ
®
heating mantles should
always be operated together with a temperature controller.
important: Both the vessel and the medium to be heated must be suitable for the applicable
max. operating temperature. The specifications of the vessel and medium manufacturers must be adhered to.
Where sensitive or dangerous media are involved, the operator must take suitable measures in line with the technical requirements to prevent excessively high tem

peratures and damage to the medium or the piLZ
®
heating mantle. as a rule, the temperature sensor must be placed at the hottest point according to the particular
application. Where a power selector is employed, the process must be constantly monitored by the operator using a temperature measuring instrument and adjusted
if necessary.
check if the operating temperatures are being correctly maintained during operation and if the total system functions normally.
penetration of medium into the piLZ
®
heating mantle
if a medium penetrates into a piLZ
®
heating mantle because of spillage, glass flask breakage or overflow, this can produce a dangerous touch voltage. The residual-
current device RCD (FI) > 30mA, which is integrated into the power plug, will switch off the heating mantle in response to fault current flow, so that a dangerous
touch voltage at accessible parts cannot occur. nevertheless, the piLZ
®
heating mantle must then be disconnected from the mains by pulling out the power plug. the
heating mantle must not be put back into operation and should be stored in a suitable place without allowing reuse. the piLZ
®
heating mantle may only be put back
into operation after a safety test by a qualified electrician (operator) or the manufacturer. The type of overloading that has occurred must be determined and the cause
eliminated.
contamination
in the event of contamination, the piLZ
®
heating mantle must be disconnected from the network immediately. the type of contamination load must then be determi-
ned. in cooperation with a competent specialist, the piLZ
®
heating mantle must immediately be stored in a suitable place and secured against reuse.
Maintenance
Like all electrical equipment, piLZ
®
heating mantles must be checked by the operator at regular intervals to ensure that they are in a safe condition
(VDE test accor

ding to BGV A3 and BetrSicherV).
maintenance and service are to be carried out in compliance with the standards stated under “safety instructions” and the relevant stipulations of the employers’ Li-
ability insurance associations, as well as the regulations applicable to the particular application. any damaged appliances must immediately be taken out of operation
and may not be reused.
repairs
piLZ
®
heating mantles are made of special materials which have to meet high requirements in terms of temperature as well as electrical and chemical stability. this
also applies to the connecting lead. repairs may only be performed by the manufacturer or an authorized company.
electric heating systems are to be installed and operated in such a way that unattended operation or accidental switching on does not represent a danger. this makes
it necessary to put suitable safety measures into place, e.g. operation using a controller and/or cut-out.
Where other rules are being applied, it is the duty of the operator to provide appropriate protective measures.
switching options of piLZ
®
heating mantles
Depending on the type of design, PILZ
®
heating mantles are fitted with an ON-OFF switch, a series/parallel switch or a heating zone switch, step switch or power
selector (see following table). Please check in advance what type of PILZ
®
heating mantle you are going to use and ensure that the relevant switch is off, so that the
device does not start heating accidentally. After plugging in and switching on the residual-current device (RCD), the heating mantle can be turned on at the appropri
-
ate switch. the piLZ
®
heating mantle features different heating zones, depending on design.
