Operating instructiOns piLZ

®

 heating mantLes, issue 2008-06

important safety instructions regarding use and operation

please read the operating instructions very carefully before using the device. Observe the information on the type plate and the war-
nings on the device. For subsequent use and operation of the device, the operating instructions should be kept in a safe place where
they must always be visible and available to the operator.
piLZ

®

heating mantles are to be operated in compliance with the relevant legislation on occupational health & safety, the country-

specific  requirements  and  the  stipulations  of  the  Employers‘  Liability  Insurance Associations  (e.g. TRGS  526  – Technical  Rules  for

hazardous substances in Laboratories). please include the present instructions into your Quality management manual as part of the

work instructions. They are to be treated as operating instructions according to TRGS 526, section 4.2.

Warnings on the product must not be removed!

the heating mantle is an electrical appliance.

Operation and maintenance of piLZ

®

heating mantles must only be carried out by a qualified electrician or a person with electrotech

-

nical training.
electric shocks may result in serious injuries.
the piLZ

®

heating mantle is provided with a residual-current device (RCD) in the power plug in order to prevent electric shock hazards.

This device will switch off the heating mantle in the event of fault occurrence (fault current).

the correct functioning of the residual-current device needs to be checked before putting the heating mantle into operation and such

checks must be repeated at regular intervals (see page 6, functional test of the residual-current device).

no moisture protection

the piLZ

®

heating mantle is not protected against moisture penetration. Moisture penetrating into the heating mantle – such as water,

liquid chemical substances or other electroconductive media used during the operating of the PILZ heating mantle – can result in dan

-

gerous electric shocks. In the event of spillage, flask breakage or overflowing liquid the heating mantle must no longer be touched.
The residual-current device (RCD) integrated into the connecting mains lead or power plug will switch off the PILZ

®

 heating mantle

in response to a fault current flow of > 30 mA, so that  a dangerous touch voltage at accessible parts cannot occur. The PILZ heating
mantle must then be disconnected from the mains by pulling the plug out of the grounded socket (Schuko).

the piLZ

®

heating mantle must afterwards not be put back into operation!

the defective piLZ

®

heating mantle must be marked accordingly and stored in a safe place. it can only be released for reuse by the

electrician in charge or a person with electrotechnical training.
the piLZ

®

heating mantle may be dried in a drying cupboard. however, before being put back into operation it has to be completely

dry and must first be checked by an electrician.

Other cases when the piLZ

®

heating mantle must be taken out of operation immediately:

Visible heat conductor in internal section

> mechanical damage

Brittle or broken glass fabric

> overheating of glass fabric

in the event of this kind of damage or any other similar damage, the piLZ

®

heating mantle has to be taken out of operation immediately

and reuse is no longer permitted. it must then be disposed of so that any further operation is excluded.

precautions against overheating

take care to avoid overheating of the piLZ heating mantle. Overheating can be avoided by using suitable temperature controllers during

operation or – where the device is equipped with several heating zones – by switching off individual heating circuits. When the liquid

level goes down, any heating circuits that are not required need to be switched off or else the total heating power must be reduced.

piLZ

®

heating mantles must not be operated with empty or encrusted/scaly flasks or with no flask at all.

Do not touch the PILZ

®

heating mantle when it is switched on or ready for operation. the heating surface must not be touched with

metal or other electroconductive objects.

Do not use any metal vessels, vessels with metal parts or other electroconductive vessels in the area of the heating surfaces. Do not

stick any needles or similar into the piLZ

®

heating mantle. this could damage the heating coil or other electrical conductors and/or the

corresponding protective systems. Furthermore, it could result in electric shocks and serious injuries.

the piLZ

®

heating mantle is fitted with a heating element along its internal section. This heating element must not be touched when

the piLZ

®

heating mantle is switched on or when it is still hot. the upper edge of the piLZ

®

heating mantles and the fastening eyelets

can reach high temperatures. there is a risk of injury due to burns.

this type of piLZ

®

heating mantle is not explosion protected! it must not be used for heating processes where there is a hazard due to

explosive media or explosive gas-air mixtures.

You should also take into account that flammable liquids can cause a fire in the event of flask breakage, overfilling or spillage.
