generaL Operating instructiOns
piLZ
®
heating mantles for laboratory and industrial applications will function to
your satisfaction provided you observe the following information. Our products
are manufactured to a high quality standard; they are systematically monitored
and checked during all stages of production and only leave our works after a final
safety test. as a rule, piLZ
®
heating mantles must be employed in accordance with
the valid regulations.
piLZ
®
heating mantles are glass-silk insulated heating systems designed for use in
industry and laboratories. the heating mantles are not protected against moisture
because of their high temperature range. The flexible heating units can be adapted
to the shapes and sizes of the corresponding vessels and thus ensure uniform heat
transfer as well as careful treatment of the laboratory vessels.
all piLZ
®
heating mantles are tested and fully heated up before leaving our works. any resulting discoloration of the glass fabric is technically
induced and does not represent a deterioration in quality.
intended use of piLZ
®
heating mantles
piLZ
®
heating mantles are designed for heating non-combustible, liquid or solid substances or mixtures in electrically non-conductive glass vessels (flasks).
note: in line with the relevant regulations,
piLZ
®
heating mantles are not suitable for heating electroconductive vessels.
Only use glass vessels (flasks) that match the corresponding heating mantles in size and shape. PILZ
®
heating mantles may only be operated by a qualified electrician
or a person with electrotechnical training. The accepted rules and standards (VDE, SEV, ÖVE, DIN standards, and particularly the accident prevention regulations) must
be complied with.
stable positioning of the piLZ
®
heating mantle
the operator of a piLZ
®
heating mantle must take appropriate measures to ensure that the heating mantle is safely positioned (e.g. fitting into a support, tripod). PILZ
®
heating mantles that have been built into corresponding housings by the manufacturer do not require any other positioning system. in the case of piLZ
®
heating mantles
of type series WHLG.. / WHLMG.. / WHLSG.. / WHU.. (metal housings) the screwed-on rod clamp may only be loaded in such a way that there is no risk of tilting or
mechanical damage (e.g. use an additional stand with a broad base to guard against tilting).
caution: piLZ
®
heating mantles must always be in an upright, level position during operation.
any objects on top of the glass vessel endanger the stability and need to be specially secured.
piLZ
®
heating mantles are suitable for carrying the deadweight of the glass vessels. With further setups, the additional weight must be taken up by suitable supports.
Heating mantles of series WHG… are provided with special hooks for mounting on a tripod with support ring.
Heating mantles of series WHLG… ,WHLMG... , WHLSG… , WHU… are built into self-standing metal housings.
transport
piLZ
®
heating mantles have to be suitably packed and transported with care. the connecting lead should never be pulled or used for carrying the heating mantle. sharp
objects that could cause damage should be kept away from the device. To avoid damage (fire risk) the PILZ
®
heating mantle must have cooled down sufficiently before
being packed for transport.
Operation of piLZ
®
heating mantles
piLZ
®
heating mantles may only be operated in suitable and well-ventilated rooms. During operation all combustible and easily flammable objects must be no closer
than 1 m from the piLZ
®
heating mantle.
grounding-type plug (schuko) as a circuit breaker (residual-current device)
in the case of piLZ
®
heating mantles with a built-in power plug, a residual-current device in the lead serves as a suitable circuit breaker.
