3. Care, Cleaning, and Maintenance
Solid fuel-burning appliances need to be frequently cleaned because of soot, creosote, and ash accumulation. We
suggest that new users check the system daily for buildup, until experience shows how often cleaning is neces-
sary. The hotter the fire, the less creosote will be deposited. Weekly cleanings may be necessary in mild weather,
even though monthly cleanings may be enough in colder months.
Clean the boiler cladding and keyboard foil as needed with a moist cloth. In the event of heavy buildup, use soapy
water or diluted suds (do not use strong cleaners or sharp cleaning instruments).
A clean boiler/heater saves fuel and protects the environment. Therefore, always clean your boiler/heater as required!
Your Windhager representative can provide you with a practical cleaning set comprised of a high quality vacuum
cleaner, a magnetic flashlight, gloves, and an apron. This will enable you to clean more quickly and conveniently.
3.1 Overview of intervals between cleaning (maintenance)
The BioWIN XL is equipped with a cleaning and ash removal interval display. The “Clean boiler and burner” request is
displayed on the InfoWIN
PLUS
and must be reset after cleaning/ash removal is completed – see section 2.8.1.1.
A clean boiler saves fuel and protects the environment. Therefore, always clean your boiler as required when the
cleaning and ash removal request is displayed.
The cleaning and ash removal intervals may be reduced or extended depending on the pellets used (e.g., ash
content), the power consumed by the heating system (frequently turning on and off), and the boiler size of the
BioWIN XL.
Annual maintenance is required in addition to cleaning. This is performed by Windhager Customer Service or the
customer service partners, and is a prerequisite of the guarantee limitations.
INFORMATION
Note for cascade installations (installation with 2 or 3 BioWINs): during routine
maintenance, only the boiler actually being cleaned needs to be shut down; the
other boiler(s) may continue to operate.
WARNING
Health hazard.
In case of an unexpected fire or if flue pipe turns red, disconnect power if the plug,
main switch, or circuit breaker is safe to reach. Call the fire department (911) and
evacuate the building. Do not enter smoke-filled rooms to disconnect power.
