Safety instructions for welders
a) Check the welder,
-
for any missing, bent or otherwise
defective welder parts.
-
for any electrical or connecting cable
fault. Do not use any accessory that
is not specifically recommended by
the manufacturer for this welder.
Even if you can mount the accessory
to your power tool, its safe use is not
guaranteed. Replace any missing
or damaged parts or have electrical
components repaired by a technician
before operating the welder.
b) Wear appropriate protective clothing
covering the whole body,
to be
protected against arcs and burns when
working.
-
Wear welding gauntlets made of leather
on both hands. This prevents electric
shock such as open circuit voltage of
the welding current circuit, protects
you against UV radiation and heat
as well as prevents the risk of burns
caused by flying sparks, slag or molten
metal. The welding gauntlets should be
checked for signs of damage before use.
-
Wearing appropriate aprons will protect
your clothing from flying sparks and
burns. For welding in difficult positions
e.g. overhead welding, a protective suit
and appropriate protective head wear
should be worn.
-
Wear sturdy, insulating shoes, the
shoes should provide insulation even in
wet conditions. Do not weld in loafers
or low shoes as molten metal can cause
serious burns. Allow the trouser legs to
fall over the shoes.
-
Do not wear synthetic clothes.
-
Any protective clothing or accessories
used should conform to the 'Personal
protective equipment' guidelines
(89/686/EWG).
c) Wear appropriate protective glasses
and protective clothing,
because the
light radiation from the arc can damage
the eyes and cause skin burns.
In addition to light and heat radiation
which can dazzle or lead to burning
of the retina, the arc also emits UV
radiation. If adequate precautions are
not taken, the invisible UV radiation
causes very painful inflammation of
the conjunctiva which only becomes
noticeable several hours after exposure.
In addition, UV radiation has an effect
similar to sunburn on unprotected parts
of the body.
-
Protect your eyes using approved
protective glasses (DIN EN 166, DIN EN
169 / protection level 9 - 11), which
should be inserted into the face shield
provided.
-
Always use protective gloves and dry
protective clothing to protect the skin
from harmful ultraviolet rays produced
by the arc welder.
d) Ensure that your protective clothing is
dry.
e) Keep others and unauthorised persons
away from the work area. Always
ensure bystanders are protected from
the dangerous effects of the arc.
-
Keep unauthorised persons away from
the welding work.
-
Secure the workplace in such a way that
bystanders are protected. They should
not come closer than 15 metres to the
arc.
-
Put up a "Caution: do not look at the
arc!" warning sign near the work area.
-
Inform persons near the arc or
assistants about the dangers and
provide them with the necessary
protective equipment. If necessary set
up protective barriers.
-
Do not work in confined spaces with
light coloured, glossy walls..
