Meeting in Head-On or Nearly-So
Situations
When two motorboats are approaching each
other head-on or nearly head-on, neither boat
has the right of way. Both boats should reduce
their speed and turn to the right, passing port
side to port side, providing enough clearance
for safe passage. Both boats should sound
appropriate signals.
The General Prudential Rule
In obeying the Rules of the Road, due regard
must be given to all dangers of navigation and
collision and to any special circumstances,
including the limitations of the vessels, which
may justify a departure from the rules in order
to avoid immediate danger or a collision.
Navigation Aids
Aids to navigation are placed along coasts
and navigable waters as guides to mark safe
water and to assist mariners in determining
their position in relation to land and hidden
dangers. Each aid to navigation is used to
provide specific information. Become famil
-
iar with these and any other markers used in
your boating area.
CAUTION
!
Storms and waves can move buoys,
do not rely on buoys alone to deter-
mine your position.
10.4 Operating your Boat
Familiarize yourself with the procedures out
-
lined in the Pre-Cruise Checklist
near the
beginning of this manual. Be seated and
ready with the controls (steering/throttle)
when the engine is started or running.
After starting the engines:
• Check engine gauges. Make sure all are
reading normally.
• Visibly check engines to be sure there
are no apparent water, fuel, or oil leaks.
