Appendix 3
Looking after sterilised instruments
Equipment that is still hot is at higher risk of contamination because the barrier presented by packaging materials of-
fers less protection in the presence of residual humidity when hot than at ambient temperature. We therefore recom-
mend that the equipment should not be piled up after it is removed from the autoclave but spread out to favour the
dispersion of heat.
Wait for the equipment to reach ambient temperature before storing it: before storage, we further recommend that
the integrity of the package and the chemical barrier should be checked; ensure that the packet is not ruptured or
torn.
We advise that equipment should be stored in sealed cupboards, installed at 30 cm from the floor and 5 cm from the
ceiling; if you do not have this type of cupboard available, store the equipment protected in nylon bags.
