Using the Network Interface
Connecting Your SPARCbook to a Network
Server
A machine that provides services to other machines on
the network, such as providing network-wide disk,
backup or printing services.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) is a family of protocols that determine how data
is transferred across a network.
Connecting Your SPARCbook to a Network
Note
Your SPARCbook can be connected to a network via the built-in network
interface or via a PCMCIA adapter card. See Chapter 10, “PCMCIA Interface”.
There are several different types of physical media to which the
SPARCbook’s Ethernet interface can be connected. These include:
•
Thick wire Ethernet or 10Base5
•
Thin wire Ethernet or 10Base2
•
Twisted pair or 10BaseT
To connect your SPARCbook to any of these media types a transceiver
is required. A wide range of transceivers are available from third-party
vendors that can be used to connect between the industry standard
connector on the SPARCbook and the physical media.
Your SPARCbook provides 26-pin mini D-type connector located on
the I/O panel, as illustrated in Figure 8-1.
