8. Service and Repair

The turntable upon which the grinding/polishing discs are placed, is
suspended by two precision ball bearings and a powerful two-speed
electric motor drives it through a V-belt drive (fig. 5).
The motor and turntable are both mounted on individual bearing
bridges which, in turn, are secured to a steel frame with rubber
vibration dampened bolts (fig. 6).
The quick-coupling in which the specimen holder is fixed is built
together with a vertically movable spindle with spindle casing to
which a gear motor is secured. The spindle casing slides in a cast
iron console and is prevented from rotating by a pin which glides in a
track in the cast iron console (fig. 4).
The cast iron console with spindle, motor and quick-coupling is fixed
to a horizontal traverse which is secured to the turntable's bearing
bridge by two steel columns (fig. 6).
The cast-iron console can be moved horizontally along the beam by
using a threaded spindle with handwheel (fig. 10).
The spindle casing with the quick-coupling and the motor is moved
up and down by two compressed-air cylinders. The weight of the
vertical, movable parts is counter balanced by the spiral spring.
