Final Assembly
(continued)
Flying Struts
34.
Remove the covering from the slots in the fuselage sides, to receive the flying struts.
Refer to the fuselage side view on
Detail Sheet 1 of 2
for the location of these slots.
35.
“Dry fit” the
top
of the flying struts, etched “Front” and “Rear” to the notches in rib W7.
Position the arrows etched on the struts so that they point
forward
toward the leading edge
of the wing.
36.
Fit and “tack glue” the base of the struts to the slots in the fuselage sides. View the model
from the
rear
. Check one wing at a time. Align your eye with the leading and trailing edge
of the wing, near the wing root. While holding the model in this position, look at the wing tip.
The trailing edge should be about 1/8 in. higher than the leading edge, at the tip of the wing.
Slide the
top
of the struts back and forth through the notches in rib W7 until this twist, called
“washout”, is achieved. Adjust the other wing in the same manner. The exact amount of
washout is not as critical, as ensuring that both wings
are
equally washed out. When
satisfied that both wings are properly adjusted, “final bond” the struts to the fuselage, and to
rib W7 with medium CA.
Radiator and Scale Engine
37.
Remove the covering from the slot in the
center
of F20. Fit the tab at the base of the
radiator into the slot. Then, press the radiator back into the radiator recess in the wing
center section. Apply small drops of medium CA to the
back
of the radiator where it
contacts the fuselage and underside of the wing, to secure it in place.
38.
Fit the scale engine to the opening in the
top
of the cowl. Position the scale engine with the
vertical tube at the
front
. Bond with CA.
39.
Cut a length of 1/16 in. heat-shrink tube to span, the distance from the tube on the
front
of
the radiator to the tube at the
front
of the engine. Bond the heat-shrink tube to the radiator
and engine with medium CA.
Note: Do not heat shrink the tube.
40.
Paint the balsa pilot silhouette “P” flat black, when dry, apply the pre-cut vinyl pilot figure
decals to
right
and
left
of the balsa silhouette (sheet 03/08, 1/20 in. balsa). Install the
completed profile pilot figure within the slot cut within the cockpit area of F1.
