Final Assembly
(continued)
19.
Remove the covering over the notches at the
front
and
rear
of F11, to receive the landing
gear struts. Fit the struts to the notches and lean the struts against the landing gear wire.
“Tack glue” the struts to the fuselage with medium CA. Do not bond the struts to the landing
gear wire. The wire must remain free to flex and absorb the shock of landing.
20.
Fit the cross piece LG4 (sheet 08/08, 1/32 in. ply) to the ends of the landing gear struts.
View the assembly from the
front
and
rear
. Ensure that it is straight and symmetrical.
Then “final bond” the struts together, and to the fuselage with medium CA.
Cabane Struts
21.
Remove the covering over the cabane strut slots along the sides of F20. Fit the cabane
strut assemblies into the slots. Position the struts so that they lean toward the
rear
, with the
arrows on the struts pointing
forward
. Ensure that the struts are fully seated against F1,
and that they are vertical and in line with the fuselage sides. Bond them to the fuselage
with CA.
22.
Lay the wing center section on the work surface
upside down
. Fit the cabane struts into the
recess in ribs W2 and bond with CA.
Tail Surfaces
23.
Using low-tack masking tape, secure the horizontal stabilizer and elevator to the work
surface, as shown. Ensure that the bevelled edge of the elevator is facing
down
, and that
there is a 1/64 in. gap between the two surfaces. Slice a length of 1/2 in. wide clear tape
down the center, leaving a strip about 1/4 in. wide. Apply this strip over the gap between
the two surfaces, to form the hinge. Trim off the excess tape.
24.
Turn the assembly over, so that the bevelled side of the elevator faces
up
. Slit the covering
over the control horn slot on the
lower-left
side of the elevator. Press the elevator horn E3
(sheet 08/08, 1/32 in. ply) into the slot. Position the control horn so that the hole for the
push rod is directly over the hinge line. Bond with medium CA.
25.
Using low-tack masking tape, secure the vertical stabilizer and rudder to the work surface
with the bevelled side facing
down.
Ensure that there is at least a 1/64 in. gap between the
two surfaces. Slice a strip of tape in half, as before, and apply it over the gap between the
two surfaces to form the hinge. Trim off the excess tape.
26.
Slit the covering over the control horn slot on the
right
side of the rudder. Press the rudder
control horn R2 (sheet 08/08, 1/32 in. ply) into the slot. Position the control horn so that the
hole for the push rod is directly over the hinge line. Bond with medium CA.
