Filament Drive ESTEPS:
Calibrating your filament drive ESTEPS (also called extruder steps)
is essential, and should be done every time you change filament types or brands. Your ESTEPS
number tells your controller how many times it should pulse the stepper motor on the filament drive.
For example, if you use the manual control tab to extrude 100mm of filament, and the ESTEPS is
correct, your filament drive will extrude exactly 100mm.
The calibration process only takes a minute and doesn’t require you to waste filament. All you need
is a metric ruler, a calculator, and an ink pen. Please follow these steps.
A)
Heat up your hot end, and leave it on; this will allow you to manually extrude. Release the
filament drive idler bearing assembly and manually pull back approximately 300mm of filament. You
could retract the filament using the Manual Control tab, but it is much quicker to pull the filament by
hand. Finally, reattach the idler bearing assembly on the filament drive. You are now ready for the
next step.
B)
Use a ruler and pen mark off 120mm on the filament, as shown in the photo below.
C)
Using the Manual Control tab, extrude exactly 120mm of filament. Then, measure what was
actually extruded and write down the number. You will use it in the next step. In my test (seen in the
image below), I attempted to extrude 120mm of filament, but the printer only extruded 115mm.
