SECTION 4
OPERATION
WARNING:
In accordance with recognised industry practice for all ventilators ensure that,
whenever a patient is being ventilated by means of an automatic ventilator, an
alternative means of ventilation (eg a manual ventilator) is readily available to use
should ventilator failure occur.
(a) User's
Skill
See Summary Statement (Section 1(a)) and Warning (Section 1(b)).
(b) Setting of Ventilator
(i) General
WARNING:
To avoid harm to the patient, pre-use checks must be performed before each use.
The ventilator should always be left with the controls set in the position specified in the
functional check (Section 3(b)) to enable it to be brought into use with a minimum of re-
adjustment. It should be stored with a suitable gas source(s) or suitable wall outlets must be
known to be available. A pre-use check must be carried out. At least one mask should also
be kept available for emergency use.
(ii)
Ventilating Patient (Refer to Table 1, page 25)
1.
Connect supply hose(s) probe to gas supply(ies).
2.
Slowly
turn on gas supply(ies) (if relevant).
3.
Check that the visual alarm(s) for supply gas failure has changed from red to white
(oxygen)/black and white (air).
4.
Set the function selection switch to ‘CMV+PEEP.
5.
Check that the alarm indicators flash in sequence and that the alarm sounds to indicate
correct function.
6.
Set ventilation parameters to suit the patient.
7.
Briefly occlude the proximal connection port of the patient circuit with the thumb.
Check that the inflation pressure reading on the manometer is appropriate for the
patient.
8.
Connect patient to ventilator and check the patient pressure manometer to ensure
correct ventilation.
9.
Check that the green cycle indicator light flashes during each inflation as the pressure
rises.
10.
Make adjustments as necessary.
11.
Temporarily reduce the high pressure alarm setting to just below the set inspiratory
pressure and check that the pneumatic alarm sounds and the high inflation pressure
indicator shows red, then reset to the required level.
NOTE: If the pressure level set on the high pressure alarm is exceeded for more than 0.5 seconds
then the electronic audible alarm will also sound.
