5 Electrical Troubleshooting
General Information - Testing
CHECKING OUT THE SYSTEM
General
Both the ignition and charging systems are internal to the
rider engine. Follow the Troubleshooting Guide, Section
2, or refer to your engine manual for information. See an
authorized dealer or appropriate service manual for addi-
tional engine troubleshooting information.
How to Use This Electrical troubleshooting
Section
This section was developed to test a rider that will not
start because of an unknown electrical component mal-
function. The electrical component tests contained here
are organized into 5 Test Series. The component tests
under these 5 Test Series are meant to be performed in
the order they are listed. However, the individual test
procedures can be used to test single components.
Whether testing an individual component, sub-system, or
the entire electrical system, perform the checks listed
under Test Series Checking the Power Supply / Fuel
Solenoid first. Then proceed to Test Series to deter-
mine whether the malfunction is located within the safety
system or the cranking system.
Reattach components after each test and touch only
points mentioned in the test procedure to avoid possible
damage to testers and components. Skipping a step or
leaving it incomplete can create a dangerous situation
and produce incorrect test results
Unless otherwise instructed, all tests must be performed
with the ground speed control lever in the neutral gate
with the parking brake engaged, the operator present
seat switch activated, and the PTO switch off.
Basic Electrical Terms:
“Ground” is the negative battery post or any other con-
ductive part of the frame. For best results, use the nega-
tive battery post as ground.
“VOM” is a volt-ohm meter, multi-meter, or equivalent.
“VDC” is volts of direct current or the VOM setting used
to measure DC voltage.
“Ohms” are units of resistance or the VOM setting used
to measure resistance.
“Continuity” is an continuous, unbroken circuit. In this
manual continuity is determined with a VOM set to mea-
sure Ohms. Zero Ohms is true continuity. However, due
to contact point corrosion and resistance within wires,
continuity may measure several Ohms.
“No Continuity” is a broken circuit. In this manual no
continuity is determined with a VOM set to measure
Ohms. No continuity will register as infinite Ohms.
“Battery Voltage” is the approximate voltage output of
the battery. Keep in mind that “battery voltage” tested at
any component will be slightly lower than “battery volt-
age” tested at the battery terminals due to resistance
within connections and wires.
