Application example with Open Transport Network (OTN)
Open Transport Network (OTN) is a flexible private communication network of OTN
Systems (formerly Nokia Siemens Networks), based on the fibre optic technology.
This system allows interconnection of electronic equipment found in complex, basi-
cally industrial installations through one single network, irrespective of the distances to
be bridged.
Today, OTN is probably the most powerful multiplexer for large, private environments
with mixed communication needs such as railways, metros, light rails, mines, airports,
pipelines, and so on.
OTN is exactly what its name implies:
-
Open
OTN can handle nearly all existing physical interface standards, but also very
specific communication protocols in special environments via its interface cards.
-
Transport
It carries different types of information (such as voice, data, LAN, and video)
completely transparently throughout the network, and does so with high avail-
ability.
-
Network
It is based on fibre optic technology in a future-proof network infrastructure,
spanning any distance.
An OTN network is built up with nodes that are interconnected by a dual fibre optic
ring. A network consists of up to 250 nodes.
Each node is mounted in a 19" rack and is equipped with network cards, interface
cards, and one or more power supply modules. The network cards provide communi-
cation between the optical rings and the interface cards.
On both rings, consecutive TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) frames circulate in oppo-
site directions. These frames provide communication between the nodes.

The OTN system offers a capacity of 150 Mbps (OTN-150), 600 Mbps (OTN-600) and
2.5 Gbps (OTN-2500). It can be deployed in networks covering distances from a few
hundred meters up to 2000 km. The distance between two consecutive OTN nodes in
