6.3 Weighing the beakers
The aluminium beakers should be clean, dry and free of fat. It is recommended to
wash them with degreaser and volatile solvent to ensure they are dry.
Once clean, handle them with latex gloves or tongs.
Number the beakers with an indelible marker.
Accurately weigh (advisable to 0.0001 g) each beaker and record the result.
Place the beakers and the rack «beaker rack».
6.4 Placing the samples in the extractor unit
Insert the «insertion holder» with the «alignment tubes» and the extraction thimbles
on the cut out profile in the front of the extraction unit.
Place in the rack «tubes support-cartridges»
With the help of the «magnetic clip» transfer the cartridges of the «extraction thimbles
rack» to the «alignment tubes».
In the extraction unit locate the levers of each column into position «RISING».
With the «insertion holder» grab the «alignment tubes» and introduce them into the
extraction unit taking care that each cartridge adheres to the magnet on each column.
6.5 Placement of the beakers and Solvent into the extractor
In the extraction unit, place the magnets of each column in position «RINSING» (Up)
Add into each aluminium beaker 50ml of Solvent.
By means of the «beaker rack», introduce the beakers under each column. Lower
the lever and at the same time align the beakers so that they are inserted under the
piece of white Teflon of each column (See 5.8).
The unit is now ready for the extraction.
From this point, the solvent cycle begins: boiling - evaporation - condensation, sub-
jecting the sample to the action of the solvent (in a gaseous or liquid state) extracting
the fat from the sample into the aluminium beaker.
