Three flares of the hand held, meteor or
parachute type
Sound Signaling Devices
NOTE: No single signaling device is
appropriate for all purposes. Consider
keeping various types of equipment on
board.
Boats less than 7.9 m (26 ft) in length
are required to carry a hand, mouth,
or power operated horn or whistle. It
must produce a blast of two second
duration and audible at a distance of at
least 800 m (1/2 mi).
Following are standard whistle signals:
– One prolonged blast (warning sig-
nal)
– One short blast (pass on my port
side)
– Two short blasts (pass on my star-
board side)
– Three short blasts (engines in re-
verse)
– Five or more blasts (danger signal).
Navigation Lights
Navigation lights are intended to keep
other vessels informed of your pres-
ence and course. If you are out on the
water between sunset and sunrise,
you are required to display appropriate
navigation lights.
Additional Recommended
Equipment
It is recommended that you acquire
additional equipment for safe, enjoy-
able cruising. This list, which is not all
inclusive, includes items you should
consider acquiring.
