SPOT 3 User's Guide
Ringer Equivalent Number (REN)
REN is a customer guide, its main purpose being to
indicate the maximum number of apparatus that should be
connected to a single telephone line without seriously
affecting the bell (or tone) ringing characteristics of the
items connected.
The REN value of this equipment is 1.5. To calculate the
maximum number of items (usually telephones) that can
be connected to a single exclusive telephone line, simply
add up the REN values and the sum should be 4 (four) or
less. The British Telecom supplied telephone is assumed to
have a REN of 1 (one) unless otherwise marked and all
other equipment should be clearly marked with an
appropriate REN value.
Because of the ringing detector characteristics a guarantee
of successful operation in an installation of mixed types of
ringing detector may not he given by the supplier.
Dialling Recommendations
It is recommended to use DTMF (tone) dialling mode
when other telephony apparatus are connected in parallel,
as LD dialling may cause bell tinkle.
When connected to a PBX, it is normal to access an outside
line by entering an access number, usually a 9 followed by
the telephony number. If a pause is required, it should be
inserted between the access number and the telephone
number. To redirect a call, Time Break Recall facility can
be used.
LD dialling cannot be used unless the external PSU is
connected.
