Dialling modes
BS6789 Section 3.1 defines three modes: Mode 1, Mode 2
and Mode 3.
– Mode 3 covers devices which auto dial the BT
emergency service (999 or 112) and then play a recorded
message e.g. burglar/fire alarms.
– Mode 2 covers devices which auto dial other numbers
(not 999 or 112) and play a recorded message.
– Mode 1, the mode provided by the modem, may be used
for all non-emergency (non-999) calls. Mode 1 specifies
that the devices must drop the line within one minute if
it receives the standard British Telecom tones for
Number Unobtainable, Busy , Equipment Engaged, Ring
or Special Information.
Calls not covered by Modes 1, 2 or 3 must not be made.
Since the SPOT uses Mode 1, when used as a modem or
fax it must not be used to make emergency (999 or 112)
calls. The SPOT handset may be used to make emergency
calls (999 or 112) even when SPOT has no external power.
