Troubleshoot
Problem Solution
My SMC is on but
doesn’t respond to
commands�
Try restarting the SMC as follows: •
Click • Start on the taskbar�
Click •
Turn Off Computer
�
Click • Restart � Your SMC restarts to the
Windows Vista Desktop�
A software program, software driver, or the •
operating system software may be corrupted,
erased, or damaged� You can use Vista to
perform a System Restore and restore the
operating system to an earlier date (restore
point) and this may correct the problem� Refer
to the Vista operating system instructions for
performing a System Restore to an earlier
restore point�
If a System Restore is unsuccessful, you may •
need to perform a System Recovery to reinstall
the operating system software� Refer to the
instructions and procedures in Ch� 17 System
Recovery in this manual�
It’s possible that a voltage spike or power •
outage has occurred� Symptoms of voltage
spikes include unexpected SMC startups and
the SMC not responding to your commands�
Note:
Avoid voltage spikes by installing a
surge suppressor or UPS power supply
between the power outlet and the SMC
power cord� A voltage spike can corrupt
or destroy files, so it is a good idea to
make frequent backup copies of your
data files.
I keep running out of disk
space�
Remove some of the larger files from your hard •
drive by moving them to a removable media
such as DVD or USB mass storage device�
