Similar to a bird feeder, the hopper feeds coal to the coal basket replacing coal as it is than consumed. The C5-45 can
run all day without a "shake down." The hopper and grate system in the C5-45 have been engineered so that, with proper
size and grade of coal, the hopper will generally feed by itself.

Basket,

The sidewalls and back of the coal basket are constructed of durable firebrick and supported with cast-iron liners.

The floor of the coal basket is made of a heavy-duty cast-iron shaker grate. All of these components may be easily
removed through the loading doors.

The combustion air is heated as it runs through channels cast in the front corners of the heater and is guided down over
the upper window, The air simultaneously cools the front panels of the coal basket before it is directed under the grate.

The grate does not overheat because the combustion air continuously cools it. The same principle is applied to the front wall of
the coal basket, which is constructed of cast-iron, and 1400°F. Glass-ceramic.

Window System-

The C-45's windows have been engineered as an integral part of the heater's combustion system; As a

result, the CS-45 provides a dramatic fireview that just is not available in traditional coal stoves. With the conventional
windowed coal stove, you must look down into the coal bed. Unfortunately, coal burns from the bottom-up, the bulk of the
burning and the fantastic view are buried under the unburned coal and behind the firebrick and cast-iron coal basket;
Reading Stove Company’s system is far more sophisticated than the simple substitution of transparent glass-ceramic for
the firebrick basket front section. Reading Stove Company’s strip glass front has been sized to maintain structural integrity
while minimizing thermal stresses and the entire assembly is air-cooled to ensure that the glass is not heated beyond its
limits. Should one or both of the strips of glass-ceramic break, the stove's output is reduced to an idle. The larger outer
windows are made out of the same transparent glass-ceramic, thus providing an additional layer of safety.

Provided with each CS-45 is a cast-iron strip panel that may be substituted for a broken strip while awaiting a replacement
glass-ceramic strip.

The glass-ceramic will gradually scar and become a white translucent strip that still allows the bright orange color of the coal
bed to be transmitted. This whitening only weakens the strips a little. Except for aesthetics, the strips do not need to be
replaced, unless broken. With reasonable care, a set of strips may last all heating season.

CAUTION NOTICE

Substitution of any high-temp glasses, glass-ceramics, or other

components in place of genuine Reading Stove Company parts may

compromise the performance, the warranty, and even the safety of your

stove.

C. COAL COMBUSTION.

A number of factors are critical to safe and efficient combustion. Each of the factors will be addressed independently in the
paragraphs that follow. If any questions remain after you have studied this section, please do not hesitate to contact your local
dealer or Reading Stove Company.

Draft.

This term is defined as the vacuum generated within the chimney by your heating system. Your stove will operate best if

you maintain a draft of .04 inches H2O to .06 inches H

2

O,

Excessive Draft.

Excessive draft will make it difficult to control the heat output of your stove, Air will move so quickly through the

system, that combustion efficiency will be hindered, and needless heat will exit the chimney.
A barometric damper must be installed on the flue pipe of your stove.

Insufficient Draft.

Insufficient draft will result in a loss of heat output and possibly some back-smoking, especially when the fueling
