3 When shipping by air, excepted packages are exempt from the requirement for use of Dangerous
Goods Declaration.
i.
For air shipments [IATA 10.8.8.3], the airway bill “Nature and Quantity of Goods” box must
read:
“Radioactive Material, excepted package, articles manufactured from depleted uranium,
UN2909.”
ii.
Required after 1 January 2007, the outside of the package must include the following label
[IATA 10.7.4.4.3]:
f. If the surface radiation level exceeds 5 µSv/hr (0.5 mRem/hr), or if there is a measurable radiation
level at 1m from the surface, use the criteria of Table 1 to determine the proper shipping labels to be
applied to the package.

Mark the outside of the outer shipping package with the proper shipping name and identification
number (Radioactive Material, Low Specific Activity (LSA-I) UN2912. If the container is packaged
inside a crate or other outer packaging, mark the outer package with the word ‘Overpack’.

Properly complete the shipping papers, indicating:
Proper shipping name, identification number and class (i.e. UN 2912 Radioactive Material,
Low Specific Activity (LSA-I), Class 7).
Name of the radionuclide (i.e. LSA-I).
Physical and chemical form (i.e. Solid Metal).
Activity of the uranium in Becquerels or other appropriate multiples of Becquerels (e.g.,
SENTINEL SENTRY 330 = 3 GBq, SENTINEL SENTRY 110 = 1.8 GBq).
Category of label applied (i.e. Radioactive Yellow II).

USNRC identification number or DOT specification number: USA/9357/B(U)-96.
Shipper's
